HIGH SCHOOL SAILING

HIGH SCHOOL SAILING UPDATES

HS SAILING @WRSC

Since the fall of 2019, we have hosted sailors from Southern High School in the fall and spring sailing seasons to compete against other schools in the area. In their first season, the team of five sailors won their first regatta and finished 4th out of 18 qualified teams at their regional event! Since then, the team has more than doubled in size.

This past year, the South River HS Seahawks joined our family in the Fall and Rockbridge Academy in the Spring as we expanded our fleet with 12 Z420s from Brown Unniversity. We are looking forward to the continued growth and success of all of our teams.

These teams join the 5000 sailors who compete in high school sailing across the United States. They will mainly compete against schools in Maryland and DC as a part of the Maryland Inter-Scholastic Sailing Association (MDISA) league, a subset of the Mid-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Assocaition (MASSA) league. At MDISA events, we will be competing at unique venues all over the area. At MASSA events, sailors from Virginia to New York compete to advance to higher level events on the path to High School Nationals.

We do not host "team tryouts" as we believe every kid should get the opportunity to join the team... We focus on making the best effort to get everyone out on the water, competing, and having fun; we will grow as needed to make sure everyone who wants to sail can. Through a sense of community and belonging developed through the sport and team bonding, we also ensure everyone feels comfortable to be on our teams.

Please note that it is our goal to give every high sailor a chance to sail for their school.  If you or someone you know is need of some financial help, please contact the Director at education@westriversc.com for scholarship information.

WE'VE EXPANDED OUR REACH & CAPACITY!

We are actively growing our program to make high school sailing more inclusive for the Southern Anne Arundel and Northern Calvert County regions! This includes students from the Crofton High School, and Northern High School districts (grades 8-12) and others...

We will help you start your school's team! No minimum number of students required to compete, although teams will compete under the "WRSC Team" name until they have grown beyond 4 students.
